Local MP, Jo Johnson, has welcomed the news that businesses in Orpington town centre have voted overwhelmingly to renew the Business Improvement District (BID) for a second term.
First established in 2013, the BID, known locally as Orpington 1st, has invested over £1 million in projects to improve Orpington High Street and the surrounding area. Orpington 1st also runs a calendar of events such as the annual Christmas light switch on – held this year on 16 November.
In the recent ballot on the BID’s future, 82.3% of businesses in the town voted in favour of Orpington 1st running until 2023. The BID is funded primarily by a levy on those business premises within the BID boundary.
Commenting on the announcement, Jo said: ‘Orpington 1st does a fantastic job promoting and improving the appearance of the town centre. Sharon Baldwin and her team have worked exceptionally hard over the last 4 years, delivering noticeable changes in the Walnuts and along the High Street.
‘I am delighted that this work has been recognised by the local business community in the form of a new mandate for the BID. I will continue to work with and support Orpington 1st as they continue to raise the town’s profile.’
