A message from Jo:
Many imagined that Orpington, the epicentre of a previous Liberal revival, might succumb to Cleggmania. The people of this constituency have in fact given a decisive endorsement of the Conservative programme for government. A clear majority of Orpington voters - 59.7 per cent - backed the Conservatives, with the Liberal Democrats receiving 24.5 per cent of the vote and the Labour party 9 per cent.
I would like to thank all those who made this terrific result possible, starting with Julian Benington, my Election Agent, and John Esler, Chairman of the Orpington Conservative Association. But swings of this size - 12.2 per cent - can only be the result of an incredible team effort, involving hundreds of volunteers and activists, and I am grateful to everyone who came out delivering leaflets, canvassing and putting up posters during the campaign.
I am honoured now to have the opportunity to represent the people of the Orpington constituency in Westminster and I will do so to the best of my ability.
