To mark International Women’s Day on Wednesday 8 March, Jo welcomed the newly-elected Head Girl of Newstead Wood School, Isabella Yerassimou, to Parliament.
Isabella, an active member of Newstead Wood’s Politics Society, was given a tour of the Houses of Parliament and learnt about what goes on in Jo’s busy parliamentary office. After lunch, Isabella was able to watch the opening stages of the debate on the Budget 2017 from the Public Gallery of the House of Commons.
Jo said: ‘It was terrific to meet with Isabella in Westminster on International Women’s Day. I was interested to learn about her studies at Newstead Wood and of her exciting plans for the future.’
International Women’s Day is an annual event that recognises the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It also supports the call for further gender parity and in 2017 encourages people to Be Bold for Change.
Jo added: ‘International Women’s Day is an important initiative that promotes gender equality and celebrates women around the globe. I am proud to be part of a government that has made improving the economic position of women a bedrock of its agenda.’
