On Friday, Jo met a group of Chinese students who are visiting St James’ RC Primary School in Petts Wood. The group, who come from Tianjin, are learning more about the British education system, as well as spending time in London, Oxford and Cambridge. The visitors have allowed the students of St James’ to interact with children of a similar age but from a very different background.
Jo enjoyed chatting to the students and teachers from Tianjin and hearing how they were finding life in the UK. Jo was then treated to a traditional Chinese Fan dance performed by the students. Headteacher Lisa Weeks then took Jo on a tour of the school, visiting Year 6 as they prepare for their upcoming SATs.
Jo said: ‘Thank you to Ms Weeks and her team for inviting me to St James’. It was fantastic to speak to the visiting students from China. It is clear that both groups of students have gained a great deal from this cross-cultural encounter. Thanks must also be given to the Orpington Chinese School who helped arrange this visit, as well as the parents who have volunteered as translators.’
